Unesco World Heritage site Vigan mining activity is closed

VIGAN CITY, Ilocos Sur, Aug 23 (PIA) -- President Aquino has signed Executive Order 79, identifying Vigan, UNESCO-listed World Heritage Site, banning mining in the city. It seems that the mining activity will close in the city. City Mayor Eva Marie S. Medina in a radio interview Thursday morning said that aside from the ordinance banning mining in the city, EO 79 also guarantees that Vigan will always stand as it is, free from any mining activity.

Vigan is market thematic tourism cluster destination

Medina said Vigan is one of the 20 "product-market thematic tourism cluster destinations" under the national government's National Tourism Development Plan. These tourism areas or clusters were listed by the Department of Tourism (DOT) after "extensive consultations" with tourism stakeholders in the whole nation.

The DOT listed 78 existing and emerging tourism development areas in the country that will be mining-free and protected from all mining acts, according to the DOT website. Vigan is definitely one of these.

The law will protect mining

Medina is confident these laws will protect this city from mining. However, she said the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is helping the city locate the boundary between the city and adjacent coastal town of Caoayan which has allowed offshore mining.

She acceded that Barangay San Pedro may be affected by mining activities as the barangay is directly adjacent to Caoayan town. The city government, therefore, is keen on locating the boundary between them with the aid of DENR to make sure it will be precise in placing protective structures in the boundary.

UNECSO includes the Lenskie Stolby Natural Park

UNECSO has included the natural park "Lenskie Stolby" in Yakutia (a region in Siberia) in its World Cultural and Natural Heritage List. This decision was taken after 10 years of inspections. This is already the 25th site in Russia that has been included in this list. The "Lenskie Stolby" Natural Park The name of the park, "Lenskie Stolby", means "pillars on the river of Lena". These are lime rock pillars of a peculiar form, up to 100 meters high, which line the bank of Lena. The site, which attracts many tourists, is situated in about 100 kms from the city of Pokrovsk. The "Lenskie Stolby" natural park occupies nearly 500,000 hectares.

Holy City Demands UNESCO Heritage Status

The local NGO Amritsar Vikas Manch has demanded from Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to bring pass a resolution in the state Assembly asking the Centre to approach UNESCO for heritage status to the 'holy city' of Amritsar. Heritage status to the holy city Amritsar In a letter written letters to Badal, Deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal and a copy to local MP Navjot Singh Sidhu, the NGO asked them to bring the resolution in the upcoming budget session of Vidhan Sabha. Charanjit Singh Gumtala President of the Manch said Chief Minister had given a public statement in 2009 promising that his party would bring this resolution in the Assembly, and after getting approval in the house it will be forwarded to the Centre with request to grant heritage status to the holy city. But even after lapsing of so much time no headway had been made'', stated Gumtala.
